Skyrail and the Underline; the maturing of Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project and Linear Park
The story of the first contemporary large scale elevated rail project in Melbourne which enabled the delivery of an associated public realm project of linear open spaces, shared trail and numerous public civic places which literally reconnected and rejuvenated the surrounding communities which had been previously separated by the rail corridor.
This presentation will speak about how the project reconnected communities in a physical way, how the community responded to that reconnection. With new public realms added to the neighbourhood, these spaces brought together diverse groups of the community and reactivated stations and typically inactivated infrastructure.
We will present some initial research into how the civic space was used pre, during and post Covid, as well and how it has matured a large scale infrastructure driven public realm addition to the community of south east Melbourne.
